Ariel stared at the ocean blue sky above her. She was used to the radiant blue of the sea, but the sky felt like something so foreign and new. There was something incredibly nostalgic and wonderful about lying on the warm sand of the beach and listening to the soft crashes of waves. This place was her favorite, since it was where the sea the land met, bringing two very different worlds together. Ariel felt very fortunate to be able to experience both, however she had to wonder why it was that she was given such a gift.
King Triton, her father, could not tell her either why she was able to do such. He explained that the gift was probably bestowed upon her from him, but he could not remember why. It took a lot of convincing actually to persuade him to not take away her legs. Triton was very distrustful of humans, but he realized if she had legs, then she would not be in the same amount of danger as she would if she were in her mermaid state.
The girl lifted herself up off the sand and spun around gleefully in her sparkling white dress. Her red hair was still drenched from the salty sea water, and she danced in the warm sand, wiggling her toes with a grin. Ariel truly felt that some part of her belonged here, and she was determined to find out why.
As she danced on the sand, she soon lost her footing on the unstable surface and tumbled into the waves with a splash. Ariel coughed at the seawater that entered her lungs and pulled off a lingering piece of seaweed that had tangled in her hair. She giggled, not realize that she was no longer alone on the shoreline.

The island had offered nothing to him and so Jim was back where he started. Maybe the ship would come to dock at some point and then he could possible question the occupants of said ship. He'd been the occupant of said ship. They had to know who he was and where he was from. He wondered if the dog he'd met was still on shore in the village. When he'd rowed onto the sandy beach bank, Jim jumped off the boat and started tugging it onto the beach, the water bringing some relief from the heat of the blazing sun.
He wondered if the tall handsome sailor he'd met on the island would follow and gave a low growl at the mere thought of him. Only when he'd managed to pull the boat to shore did he catch the white out of the corner of his eye from behind a rock. Curiousity caused Jim to step closer and as he drew closer the flash of red hair caused an eyebrow to shoot into the air. The young girl dancing there made him smile. He didn't remember smiling often. He didn't remember seeing anything so beautiful before.
Then she splashed into the water and he winced darting out of his hiding place behind the rock and toward her but he stopped when she started to giggle. Jim tilted to the side trying to see her face since her back was currently turned to him. "Ma'am? Are you okay? Do you need help?" He asked with a frown on his features as he started toward her.

Ariel was greatly surprised by sudden voice, and she flailed with a collection of splashes like a fish out of water. Startled, the girl rushed to climb up a nearby rock and hid without much success. The person stepped forward, and her blue eyes peeked up from the ledge, blinking and staring in curiosity. Her head tilted at the beautiful brunette boy, and she moved forward to take a closer look, almost falling off the rock.
“Oh…you’re a human…”
Ariel smiled brightly and giggled as she pointed to her bare feet, toes wiggling energetically.
“I have feet too! See?”
It did not occur to her that such words could come off as strange to a human, but with so little experience having legs, she did not really know any better. No longer afraid, she climbed off of the rock and bounced in Jim’s direction before stopping a few feet away from him, smiling from ear to ear in excitement. Finally she found a human!
“I’m Ariel!”
Her hair was a tangled mess from the tumble, and she used her fingers to try and comb out the knots.
“Do you have a dinglehopper?"
Ariel was embarrassed by her appearance, but she was more interested in this boy. Perhaps he knew something about her past that could help her. After all, he seemed like a smart, savvy young man.

Jim watched as the girl flailed and then tried to hide from him behind a rock. He thought only blondes were ditzy. He could have been wrong though. She peaked out at him and with a quirked eyebrow and a quizical look on his face he pretended to inspect the sand as if pondering whether he'd really seen the clumbsy girl. Finally she spoke up and his head snapped up to look his eyes with hers. They were the most beautiful blue. Such a shame they reminded him of the obnoxious Tom back on the island.
Jim's eyebrow stayed raised as she showed off her feet and her toes. Human? She didn't seem like an elf or even a dwarf but she refered to him as human. "Wait. What are you then? If not human?" He asked tilting his head to the side. Well he had met the strangest creatures in the port village down the coast or so he hoped. If he didn't get to Dodger soon, he feared the dog would find another companion.
Out of all the people he'd met so far, Dodger had been the perfect match for him and the dog was starting to grow on him. The girl scrambled from the rock she'd been on and bounced through the water toward him causing a little more caution to fill his veins. Jim stepped back keeping his eyes on her. Her name was Ariel. His eyebrows raised up in surprise. "Ariel? You know your name! How'd you find out or is it a name you chose. Maybe you have a locket..." The last part was grumbled in disappointment.
Figure that. Girls would have lockets with their names on wouldn't they. Jim groaned and sighed before giving her a strange look as she combed through her hair. Cautiously he reached out and pulled some see weed from her red hair tossing it aside. "What's a dinglehopper?" He asked in confusion.
