Why should I worry? Why should I care I might not have a dime But I got street saviore faire
It was starting to get hot, and Dodger was about to get very thirsty. So after a few minutes of sitting there, he stood up and grabbed his bandanna and collar. He layed them down on the ground, stuck his nose in the middle and picked his head up, and the collar and bandanna fell back onto his neck, right where it had been a few minutes ago, then he promptly made his way over to a well a few yards away. Someone had left the bucket on the ground and it still had a few inches of water in the bottom, so Dodger stuck his head in and lapped up the little bit of water that was there. Once he had cooled down some he made his way back to the tavern and sat as he waited patiently for his human friend to come out.
Dodger hadn't been sitting around very long when he heard someone come dashing out of the tavern. Then he heard his name yelled and he stood up quickly, and looked around to see Jim running out of the Tavern with a plate of food in his arms...and judging by the crowd of people rushing after him, he hadn't taken it the polite way. Dodger smirked. So the kid did have a back bone. Nice. He was about to dart off after his friend, when the two big guys from inside pointed to him HEY! That's his dog!
Dodger's eyes widened and he looked down the road to see Jim disappear around a corner. Great. He was on his own. The two big guys were coming towards him, and he had to think fast. He glanced around, hoping for an escape route, and found that he didn't have a whole lot of options. He looked up at the big guys that were coming towards him, and turned to make a run for it, and nearly ran into the bartender. Crap. was all he could think, seconds later the bartender had him in his arms, and Dodger was scwirming around trying to get free. The bartender laughed, I bet that kid will think twice before he steals from me again! I guess I have a new dog as payment!
Dodger snorted. Right, not if he had anything to say about it. He'd have to make an escape, and quick, seeing as how the big guys were moving this way and fast. He sighed, sometimes a dog's gotta do what a dog's gotta do...and this was one of those times. He looked at the bartender's arm and only hesitated a second before digging his teeth into him. He was dropped, or rather thrown down instantly and landed hard on his side. As he went to stand up the bartender gave him a hard kick to his ribs and knocked him over again, he yelped as he once again hit the ground. This time instead of standing up immediately he rolled over a few times to get out of reach and stood up. He glared at the bartender before taking off, only to be grabbed by the collar by one of the big guys, but he quickly turned and slipped right out and was gone.
Once he knew he wasn't being followed he ran off after Jim, being a dog it didn't take him long to get his friend's scent and follow him to the ship yard. As he finally found his friend he collapsed down beside him, breathing heavy. What a day, he had lost his favorite bandanna and his collar, and his ribs hurt like crazy, and of course the tomato stain was still fresh on his side.

Jim jerked when he noticed that his companion, Dodger, was not by his side. In a snap he was on his feet searching for the dog . "Dodger? Dodger!" Then the dog came around the corner and practically fell at his feet panting and exhausted. If he'd known what had happened, he'd have gone to save the dog. His dog now. Jim slowly went down on his hands and knees and stroked at Dodger's furr frowning slightly at the dog.
Had he gotten hurt?? Jim smoothed a hand down Dodger's side and when the dog twitched or made a sound, he knew where it had gotten hurt and there was red, wet red as well. Urgh. Jim quickly pulled off his jack and lay it gently across Dodger's form before pushing the bowl of food between Dodger's paws. That's when he noticed that the bandana and collar were gone. Jim sighed heavily.
"I'll get it back okay? I promise. I'll fix things for us. I swear. Go on eat up. I'll get some more later." His poor Dodger. Jim couldn't leave the dog but duty called and he had to go find his ship. If he told Dodger to stay here then maybe the dog would listen. "Dodger. I'm gonna trade for a row boat. I'm gonna go back to the ship I jumped from in the first place. You have to stay here. "
He took hold of Dodger's face and looked into his eyes. "There are people gutting fishes every day on the docks. If you go up to them with puppy dog eyes they'll give the guts to you instead of tossing it to the stray cats. You have food here. You're safe here. You have to stay here and wait for me. Okay? I'll be just a few days. Okay Dodger? Stay?"

Dodger let out a heavy sigh as Jim started to stroke his fur. It was nice to be touched in a way that wasn't hurtful, and could almost be considered affectionate. It wasn't until Jim's hands reached the bottom of his ribs that he tensed and whined. Of course he instantly regretted it and relaxed quickly. Geez it hurt. And to think he had run all the way from the tavern hurting like this. That couldn't have been good for him.
Dodger watched as Jim took off his jacket and put it over him. Now Dodger felt important. It was nice to feel appreciated and wanted...and it felt even better that someone was worried about him. And then the plate of food was placed infront of him. He lifted his head and looked at it. He was about to start eating when Jim started talking, and Dodger looked up at him to listen.
Get it back? What was he talking about...oooh the bandanna...and the collar. He shrugged it off. He didn't really want Jim going after those Kooks. They were crazy and he didn't want Jim getting hurt...especially when Dodger wasn't there to help. Of course one could argue that Dodger wasn't that great, but he hadn't really been prepaired for the anbush. "I'll fix things for us I swear" Wow he sure was intent about this. Dodger wondered if he felt bad about him getting hurt. That could be. Then he was told to eat up so he did.
As Jim began to talk again, Dodger listened as he ate, but his last words made Dodger jerk his head up. "You have to stay here" Was he serious? Dodger whined as he sat up to get a little closer to the boy, a movement that brought a little bit of pain. As Jim took hold of his face the dog realized that he was being serious. He really wanted him to stay here? He began to talk about how he could get food and how he'd be safe. Wait here? Few days? He didn't like this. What if something happened? What if those guys came back, or somthing happened to Jim and Dodger wasn't there to help him? He whined and licked Jim's face. He didn't want to stay here. He lay back down, ignoring the food beside his face and put his ears down in a way that made him look kind of sad. He didn't want to be left alone. He'd only just now found a companion.
